Sports psychology in business; the business of beer

Stephen Mellalieu, a Professor in Sport Psychology at Cardiff Metropolitan University, provided an insight into how the rationale behind sports psychology can be applied to business.

Professor Steve Mellalieu is also the Associate Dean for Research for the Cardiff School of Sport and Editor of the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology.

Mellalieu has been consulting in high performance sport over 20 years, supporting a range of teams and governing bodies; working within professional rugby union for the past decade. He is a Chartered Psychologist of the British Psychological Society, a registered Practitioner Psychologist, Partner with the Health and Care Professions Council, and a British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences accredited Sport Scientist.

Martin Reed, the Finance Director of SA Brain & Co, described the complex nature of managing the finances around beer, pubs and a chain of coffee shops.

Reed spent his early career in the accounting profession before joining The Boots Group in Nottingham. In 1997 he left Boots to become Finance Director of AIS a retail buying group.

He is now the Finance Director of SA Brain & Co. He joined the Welsh brewer and pub owner/operator in 2002 at a time when the business was looking to modernise its retail operations and reinvigorate the brand.

Following the sale of the Free Trade business to Heineken in 2009 and a subsequent restructure, Brains acquired Coffee#1, which has since expanded from the original 15 outlets in 2011 to 76 in early 2017.

In 2016 the Company entered into an agreement to develop and sell the current brewery site and is now looking for a new site to build a new brewery including a visitor centre and offices.
